Elevate your livestock’s health and nutrition with lucerne – the ideal choice for optimising your animals’ well-being

Alfalfa (Medicago saltiva), also known as lucerne, is cultivated as an important versatile forage crop in many countries around the world.  Primarily used as feed for high-producing dairy cows, because of its high protein content and highly digestible fibre, and secondarily for beef cattle, horses, sheep and goats.

Lucerne is suitable for both autumn and spring planting. It thrives in well-drained soil but can’t tolerate waterlogged conditions.  Spring sowing occurs between September and November, while autumn planting starts from February to April.

One of lucerne’s unique features is its preference for neutral pH soils, with a minimum requirement of pH 6.5 to 7.5 for maximum yields. Soil acidity with a pH below 6.7 can significantly impact lucerne productivity.

Lucerne or alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is renowned for its drought tolerance but responds positively to irrigation.  It offers options for both winter dormant varieties, which have longer lifespans and are well-suited for grazing, and fewer winter dormant varieties, ideal for hay production.

Harvesting and usage

Lucerne is mechanically harvested, with the first cutting initiated at the bud stage and subsequent cuttings following flowering. Typically, the period between planting and the first cut is around 42 days, allowing for five to six cuts per year.

Uses of lucerne in livestock farming Cattle feeding on hay

  • Grazing: lucerne provides excellent grazing for livestock, although precautions are necessary to prevent bloat.
  • Silage: It can be used to create fermented high-moisture fodder suitable for ruminants.
  • Hay: lucerne is perfect for cutting, drying, and storing as a nutritious livestock feed during times of scarcity.
  • Feeding: Dairy and beef cattle farmers rely on lucerne to maintain optimal animal performance.
